Transparencies

“Transparencies” explores a photographic archive from Stevenson's father, who was an architect in the Public Works Departments in Lagos, Nigeria during the 1950s and Honiara, Solomon Islands from the 1960s to 1990s. Experimenting with 35 mm colour slides these images exploit analogue defects such as mould blooms, scratches, and incorrect exposures by rephotographing slides layered on a light box. The photographs juxtapose images from Nigeria with those from the Solomon Islands, considering the legacy of colonial infrastructure in each.

Exhibited at ArtWest Exhibition, Auckland, 2018. Awarded the prize for photography by curator Ioana Gordon-Smith.
